From airport arrival to final departure, Safari Gateway coordinates ground handling, accommodation, flights, transfers, safaris, groups and MICE across Zanzibar, Pemba and mainland Tanzania.
The United Republic of Tanzania brings together the mainland and the semi-autonomous islands of Zanzibar, including Unguja and Pemba.
A valid Tanzania visa covers travel to both the mainland and Zanzibar. However, foreign visitors entering Zanzibar are also required to comply with Zanzibar's separate mandatory inbound insurance and additional entry requirements.
Safari Gateway designs and coordinates mainland safaris, Zanzibar and Pemba holidays, airport transfers, ground handling and combined itineraries — one trusted local partner throughout the journey.
Zanzibar is an archipelago known for Swahili heritage, tropical beaches, spices and warm hospitality.
Most international visitors arrive on Unguja, the main island and home of Stone Town. Pemba, to the north, is greener, quieter and deeply connected to cloves, fishing, seaweed farming and traditional island life.
Zanzibar and Pemba are predominantly Muslim and rooted in Swahili culture. Respecting local dress, religious practice, prayer times and Ramadan creates warmer encounters.
Most travellers require a Tanzania visa. Because Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania, the same visa is used for mainland and island travel. We can help you understand the available options; the final decision remains with Immigration.

Since 1 October 2024, foreign visitors entering Zanzibar (Unguja, Pemba and associated islands) are generally required to purchase inbound travel insurance issued through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). This is separate from the Tanzania visa and from any personal international travel insurance. A private policy does not replace ZIC.

Amounts and categories are subject to confirmation on the official portal: inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz.
Requirements depend on nationality, route and individual circumstances. As a general preparation list:
Minors should travel on their own passports. Additional documents — such as a birth certificate or a parental consent letter — may be requested depending on nationality, airline and routing. This is not a single rule for every family; check with your airline and the authorities on your route.
Tanzania sits near the equator. European or American "summer" (June–August) is the long dry high season here. "Green season" is the long rains: lush landscapes, quieter parks and often softer rates.
| Period | Season | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| June – October | Long dry / high season | Northern Serengeti migration, Kilimanjaro, beaches. Busiest. |
| November | Short rains | Fewer crowds, good value, afternoon showers. |
| December – March | Warm short-dry / coastal high | Beaches, Mafia whale sharks, southern Serengeti calving, strong Kili window in Jan–Feb. |
| March – May | Long rains / green season | Lush scenery, birds, privacy. Some remote camps close. Less ideal for a first Kilimanjaro climb. |
Zanzibar and Pemba stay warm year-round. Monsoon winds change sea conditions for diving and dhows. We match itineraries to weather, not only calendar labels.
Uhuru Peak is 5,895 metres. It is a trek rather than a technical climb; altitude is the main challenge. Allow 6–9 days depending on route. Longer itineraries generally improve acclimatisation.
We work with licensed mountain partners and can combine Kilimanjaro with a short safari and Zanzibar recovery days.
The most reliable snorkel encounters in Tanzania are off Mafia Island (mainland Tanzania, not Zanzibar), near Kilindoni.
Zanzibar is the historic Spice Islands. Pemba produces the large majority of the archipelago's cloves. During harvest, villages can smell of drying buds for weeks.
Seaweed farming is a signature coastal livelihood and part of Zanzibar's blue economy. Most farmers are women working the intertidal zone on Unguja and especially Pemba.
Coastal Tanzania is Swahili: African, Arab, Indian and European histories, lived through family, faith, food and the sea.
Zanzibar is a Muslim-majority society. Visitors are welcome and are not required to fast. Public respect is expected and may be guided by the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism.

Requirements depend on nationality, route and individual circumstances. Always verify them with the responsible authorities before departure.
